# Editing an Attribute in Detail

> Customize an attribute's name, tooltip, icon, variant behavior, and visibility, and see how ratings and review apps connect to your data.

## **Edit an attribute in detail**

After you add an attribute, open it to customize how it appears.

* **Name** is the customer-facing label. Changing it only changes the label, not the underlying Shopify field.

* **Tooltip** adds optional helper text for shoppers.

* **Icon** lets you upload a small image next to the attribute. Uploads must be **500 KB** or smaller. Common image formats are accepted.

* **Comparable** marks whether this attribute should appear in comparison views when you use comparison features that rely on comparable attributes.

* **Show in specification table** marks whether this attribute appears in the specification table itself. Turn it off if you only want the attribute available for comparisons, without showing it as a row on the specification table.

  If an icon upload fails, shrink the file under 500 KB and confirm the file is a normal image type.

## **Varies by variant (Growth plan)**

For attributes connected to a Shopify metafield, you can turn on **Varies by variant** so the value can be different for each variant of a product, instead of one value shared across the whole product.

* The metafield key itself does not change. Turning this on only changes where the value is stored and edited — as a **variant** metafield instead of a **product** metafield.

* Once enabled, go to the product's variant to enter a value for each variant, such as a different dial color or strap type per variant.

* On the product details page in the app, variant-based attributes are marked with a small variant icon next to the metafield connection, so you can tell at a glance which attributes read from the variant instead of the product. * On the storefront, the specification table shows the value for the variant the shopper currently has selected, and can flash-highlight that row when the shopper switches variants. See [Specification Table Editor Highlights](/appearance/specification-table-editor-highlights).

  Turning **Varies by variant** on or off changes where the app reads the value from. Re-enter values on the correct level (product vs. variant) after switching this setting so rows do not appear empty.

## **Ratings and review apps**

If you add a **Rating** attribute, it uses rating data stored on the product in Shopify. Review apps such as Judge.me or Loox often write ratings into product metafields. If ratings are empty, confirm your review app is saving ratings where Shopify product metafields can read them.
