# Variant-Based Attributes

> Turn an attribute into a per-variant value with Varies by variant, and see how it shows up across the app and storefront.

## **Why use a variant-based attribute**

Some attributes are true for the whole product — like Brand or Movement Type. Others change per variant — like Dial Colour or Band Colour, where a 42mm Rose Gold variant should show a different value than a 40mm Silver variant of the same product. **Varies by variant** lets a single attribute hold a different value for each variant instead of one shared value.

## **Turn it on**

1. Open **Specification table** and edit the table that contains the attribute.

2. Open the attribute connected to a Shopify metafield.

3. Turn on **Varies by variant**.

4. Save the attribute.

The metafield's key does not change — only the level it is stored at changes, from a product metafield to a variant metafield.

  Values entered at the product level do not automatically copy down to variants when you turn this on. Enter (or re-enter) the value on each variant afterward.

## **Enter values per variant**

Once **Varies by variant** is on, go to the product's variant in Shopify admin and enter the attribute's value there. Repeat for each variant that needs its own value.

## **Where you'll see it in the app**

* **Products list** — each product shows its variant count, so you know at a glance which products can use variant-based values. See [Products List Overview](/products/products-list-overview).

* **Product details page** — the attribute connection list marks variant-based attributes with a small variant icon next to "Connected to this variant metafield." See [Opening a Product's Details Page](/products/opening-a-products-details-page).

## **Where you'll see it on the storefront**

* **Specification table** — shows the value for the variant the shopper currently has selected, and can flash-highlight that row when the shopper switches variants if you enable it in the specification editor. * **Comparison table** — shoppers can pick a variant for each compared product from a dropdown, and the row values update to match. See [Variant-Based Comparison](/comparison-tables/variant-based-comparison).
